ROLE MODEL/IN$PIRATION: Veronica Lee
Veronica Lee is the impossibly beautiful Korean-born illustrator, artist and stylist and one of Priestess NYC’s most valued auteurs. Hailing from Seoul with roots going back to Hawaii and Colorado (she earned her BFA from University of Colorado at Boulder), she moved to NYC to start work in mid-town’s cut-throat garment district. It wasn’t long before she was snapped up by directional retailer SEVEN NY where she oversees online marketing, merchandising and styling. But what really got our juices flowing are her cutting-edge, ultra-creative doodles and illustrations.
Her artwork is subversive, seductive, pictorially perverse and just plain cool! Veronica has a proclivity for creating monstrously cute figures (think ‘kawaii’ with a streak of violence) with disproportionately large heads, twisted bulbous limbs, distorted anatomy and lovable hybrid, mutant-like qualities. She describes her creative output as ‘interior visions’ and ‘subterranean expressions.’ And thank goodness for that! Many of her subconsciously derived works are done in watercolor on rice paper of stylized creatures who are ostensibly members of a composite race, part human and part octopus (or goat or unicorn). Her pop-surrealist compositions and subject matter approximate ‘liminal beings’ caught between two natures and multiple dimensions/dream-states like the mythic hippocentaurs. They tend to be sweet juvenile misfits who solipsistically exist in an underground play-sphere complete with purple sauropods (dinosaurs), golden piglets and floating breasts. Miss Lee’s furtive imagination and deft hand recall the “Superflat” paintings of Takashi Murakami and otaku culture (おたく).
Her super-cute iconosphere of lascivious looking playthings might be a bubbling cauldron of fetish-y weirdness but her work represents a renegade aesthetic that is creative, beautifully grotesque and technically distinguished. We sooooo heart VERONICA LEE! Select works below:
